Banlangen Radix lsatidis

The source is from the root of Isatis tinctoria L., family Cruciferae. The root is dug and collected in autumn, from which silt is removed, dried in the sun and the crude is used.

Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the heart and stomach meridians.

Actions Clear away heat and remove toxin, cool the blood and benefit the throat.

Application

It is indicated for seasonal febrile diseases with fever, sore throat, maculae and papules, swollen head due to infection, carbuncle, and sore toxin, etc.. Since its action is stronger in clearing away heat and removing toxin, it is usually used for overabundance of heat and good at removing toxn and benefiting throat as well. For exogenous wind and heat with fever, headache or onset of seasonal febrile diseases with the above syndromes, it is usually combined with Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae), Lianqiao ( Fructus Forsythiae ) , and Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae), etc. ; for the treatment of swollen head due to infection with red and swollen face and head, unsmooth throat, usually combined with Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), Lianqiao ( Fructus Forsythiae ), and Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii), etc., such as Puji Xiaodu Yin (Decoction).

It is now often used for infectious diseases of pathogenic factors, such as encephalitis B, hepatitis, and epidemic parotitis, etc... Usage and Dosage 10 -15 g is used in decoction for oral use.
Notes Contraindicated for deficiency and cold of the spleen and stomach.

Chuanxinlian Herba Andrographitis

The source is from the herb of Andrographis paniculata ( Bum. f. ) Nees., family Acanthaceae. The plants are cultivated in the areas of South, East and Northwest China, at the early stage of autumn when the flower blossoms, the medicinal material is collected and dried in the sun. The crude or the fresh is used.

Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the lung, stomach, large and small intestine meridians.

Actions Clear away heat, eliminate toxin, dry dampness and relieve swelling.
Application

1. It is generally indicated for seasonal febrile diseases, cough due to lung-heat and pulmonary abscess. For the beginning of seasonal febrile diseases with fever and sore throat, it can be combined with Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae ) , Lianqiao ( Fructus Forsythiae ), and Bohe (Herba Menthae ), etc. ; for cough due to lung-heat, combined with Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis ) and others that clear away lung-heat; for pulmonary abscess with thick sputum, mostly combined with Yuxingcao ( Herba Houttuyniae ), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), etc. to clear away lung-heat and resolve pus. It is now widely used for upper respiratory tract infection and other infectious diseases.

2. It is generally indicated for dysentery due to damp-heat and stranguria due to heat. For dysentery due to damp-heat, it can be used alone or combined With Machixian ( Herba Portulacae ), Huanglian ( Rhizoma Coptidis), etc.; for stranguria due to heat with dribbling urination with pain, mostly combined with Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis ), Baimaogen (Rhizoma Imperatae ), and Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), etc..

3. For carbuncle, pyogenic infection and snake-bite poisoning, the fresh can be ground into pieces for external application, or combined with Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae), Zaoxiu (Rhizoma Paridis), and Yejuhua ( Flos Chrysanthemi Indici), etc. for being used internally.

Usage and Dodge 6 -9 g is used in decoction for oral use. Or added to pill, powder or tablet, or prepared into injection. Just right amount is used externally. Notes: It is not suitble for deficiency and cold of the spleen and stomach.

The source is from the whole plant of Lobelia chinensis Lour., family Campanulaceae. The medicinal material is produced in all parts of China but more in the reaches of the Yangtze River and the south provinces of China, collected in summer, dried in the sun or in shade. The crude or the fresh can be used.

Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the heart, small intestine and lung meridians.

Actions Clear away heat and eliminate toxin, promote diuresis to relieve edema.

Application
1. It is indicated for snake-bite poisoning, bee or scorpion injuries and carbuncle of heat type, especially for snake-bite poisoning and it is a common Chinese medicine to treat snake-bite poisoning. It is used internally or externally, or the fresh is ground for external application.

2. It is indicated for ascites, edema and dysuria. It has remarkable and constant actions in promoting diuresis, can be used singly or together with Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis ) , Zexie ( Rhizome Alismatis ) and others that promote diuresis. Usage and Dosage 10 -15 g is used in decoction for oral use; 30 -60 g of the fresh is used; just right amount is used externally.

Notes Contraindicated for deficiency syndrome with edema.

Guanzhong Rhizoma Dryopteris Crassirhizomae

The source is from rhizome with petiole base of Dryopteris crassirhizoma Nakai, family Dryopteridaceae and Blechnum orientale L., family Blechnaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang, etc., collected in autumn, dried in the sun. The crude is cut into pieces for being used or the carbonized one is used. Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, slightly cold in nature, small toxic and attributive to the liver and spleen meridians.
Actions: Clear away heat and eliminate toxin, kill worms, cool the blood and arrest bleeding.

Application
1. It is indicated for cold due to wind-heat, seasonal febrile diseases with maculae and papules, carbuncle of heat type and mumps. It is usually combined with Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae ) , Lianqiao ( Fruclus Forsythiae ), Daqingye ( Folium Isatidis ), and Pugongying ( Herba Taraxaci), etc.. It is now used for influenza, measles, mumps, and encephalitis B. etc..

2. It is indicated for many kinds of intestinal parasitosis such as tapeworm, hook worm and roundworm. For killing typeworm and hook worm, it is usually combined with Binglang ( Semen Arecae ); for treatment of roundworms with abdominal pain, usually combined with Shijunzi ( Fructus Quisqualis ), Kuliangenpi ( Cortex Meliae Radicis), etc. ; for pinworm, it can be decocted alone for washing the round of anus before sleeping.

3. It is indicated for bleeding such as haematemesis, epistaxis, hemafecia, metrorrhagia, and especially for profuse uterine bleeding, being more effective in treatment of blood-heat syndrome. It can be used alone and also combined with Cebaiye ( Cacumen Biotae), Baimaogen (Rhizoma Imperatae) and others that can cool the blood and arrest bleeding.

Usage and Dosage 10 -15 g is used in decoction for oral use, the crude is suitable for killing worms and clearing away heat and eliminate toxin and the charred one for arresting bleeding.

Baitouweng Radix Pulsatillae

The source is from the root of Pulsatilla chinensis (Bunge) kegel, family Ranunculaceae. The medicinal material is produced in the areas of Northeast China, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and North China. It is dug and collected in spring and autumn, its leaves, flower stems and fibrous roots being removed and its root stock enlarged and covered with white hairs being kept, and dried in the sun. The crude can be used. Medicinal Properties: Bitter in flavor, cold in nature, and attributive to the large intestine meridian.

Actions Clear away heat and eliminate toxin, cool the blood and treat dysentery.
Application

1. It is indicated for dysentery of heat type and an essential medicine to treat dysentery and especially suit-able for dysentery of serious heat with the fresh blood. It can be used alone or combined with Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis ) , Huangbai ( Cortex Phellodendri ), and Qinpi ( Cortex Fraxini), etc., such as Baitouweng Tang (Decoction). It is also effective to treat bacillary and amebic dysentery.

2. For scrofula, carbuncle and scaby head, it can be used internally or externally. For damp-heat in the lower part with pudendal itching, and leukorrhea, it can be combined with Kushen (Radix Sophorae Ftavescentis ), which are decocted for externally washing. Usage and Dosage 9 -15 g is used in decoction for oral use. Just right amount is used externally.

Notes Contraindicated for dysentery due to deficiency and cold.

Yuxingcao Herba Houttuyniae

The source is from herb of Houttuynia cordata Thunb., family Saururaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in all provinces of the south to the reaches of the Yangtze River, collected in summer, dried in the sun and the crude form is used.
Medicinal Properties Pungent in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the lung meridian.

Actions Clear away heat and eliminate toxin, treat carbuncle and promote pus drainage, promote diuresis for treating stranguria.

Application
1. It is indicated for cough due to lung-heat, pulmonary abscess, and an essential medicine to treat pulmonary abscess. For pulmonary abscess marked by cough with bloody purulent sputum, it is usually combined with Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi ), Lugen ( Rhizoma Phragmitis), and Gualou ( Fructus Trichosanthis), etc.. For cough due to lung-heat with yellow and thick sputum, it is usually used together with Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Beimu ( Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii ), and Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae ) and others that can clear away heat and resolve phlegm.

2. For pyocutaneous diseases of heat type, it is usually combined with Jinyinhua ( Flos Lonicerae ), Pugongying (Herba Taraxaci ), Yejuhua ( Flos Chrysanthemi Indici) and others that can clear away heat and eliminate toxin, the fresh being ground into pieces for external application.

3. For stranguria of damp-heat type and edema, it can combined with Cheqianzi ( Semen Plantaginis ) and Haijinsha ( Spora Lygodii) to play a role together in inducing diuresis for treating stranguria.

Usage and Dosage 15 -30 g is used in decoction for oral use, just right amount for external use. But it is not suitable to be decocted for a long time since it includes volatile oil.
