Yuxingcao Herba Houttuyniae

The source is from herb of Houttuynia cordata Thunb., family Saururaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in all provinces of the south to the reaches of the Yangtze River, collected in summer, dried in the sun and the crude form is used.
Medicinal Properties Pungent in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the lung meridian.

Actions Clear away heat and eliminate toxin, treat carbuncle and promote pus drainage, promote diuresis for treating stranguria.

Application
1. It is indicated for cough due to lung-heat, pulmonary abscess, and an essential medicine to treat pulmonary abscess. For pulmonary abscess marked by cough with bloody purulent sputum, it is usually combined with Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi ), Lugen ( Rhizoma Phragmitis), and Gualou ( Fructus Trichosanthis), etc.. For cough due to lung-heat with yellow and thick sputum, it is usually used together with Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Beimu ( Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii ), and Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae ) and others that can clear away heat and resolve phlegm.

2. For pyocutaneous diseases of heat type, it is usually combined with Jinyinhua ( Flos Lonicerae ), Pugongying (Herba Taraxaci ), Yejuhua ( Flos Chrysanthemi Indici) and others that can clear away heat and eliminate toxin, the fresh being ground into pieces for external application.

3. For stranguria of damp-heat type and edema, it can combined with Cheqianzi ( Semen Plantaginis ) and Haijinsha ( Spora Lygodii) to play a role together in inducing diuresis for treating stranguria.

Usage and Dosage 15 -30 g is used in decoction for oral use, just right amount for external use. But it is not suitable to be decocted for a long time since it includes volatile oil.

Jinqiaomai Rhizoma Fagopyri Cymosi

The source is from rhizome of Fagopyrum cymosum (Trev.) Meisn., family Polygonaceae. The medicinal material is produced in the provinces of Shaanxi, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, and Zhejiang, etc., dug and collected in autumn, dried in the sun, cut into segments or small pieces for being used.

Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, neutral in nature and attributive to the lung, spleen and stomach meridians.
Actions Clear away heat and eliminate toxin, clear the lung to resolve phlegm.

Application
1. It is indicated for cough due to lung-heat, pulmonary abscess with vomiting of pus and blood. It can clear away lung-heat and eliminate toxin and is as a common medicinal herb like Yuxingcao ( Herba Houttuyniae) to treat cough due to lung-heat and pulmonary abscess. The both medicinal herbs can be combined with each other or with others that clear away lung-heat and resolve phlegm.

2. It is used for carbuncle of heat type, erisipelas, snake-bite poisoning. It can be used internally or externally. It is effective for the fresh leaves to be ground singly into pieces for external application, or they can be used together with others that clear away heat and eliminate toxin.

Usage and Dosage 15 -25 g is used in decoction for oral use. For pulmonary abscess, it should be stewed with water in a separated container.

Hongteng Caulis Sargentodoxae

The source is from the stem of a deciduous woody vine, Sargentodoxa cuneata Rehd. et Wits., family Lardizabalaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in provinces of Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, and Jiangsu, etc. and collected in autumn and summer, cut into segments when fresh and dried in the sun for use.
Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, slightly cold in nature and attributive to the large intestine and liver meridians.

Application
1. It is indicated for periappendicular abscess with abdominal pain and an essential medicine to treat periappendicular abscess. It can be used together with Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei ), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan Radicis), Jinyinhua (Ftos Lonicerae) and others that can clear away heat, eliminate toxin and cool the blood so as to strengthen the action of eliminating toxic materials and dissipating abscess.

Baijiangcao Herba Patriniae

The source is from the root and stem of Patrinia Scabiosaefolia Fisch, family Valerianaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in the provinces of middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, collected in autumn, washed, dried in shade and cut into segments and the crude one is used.

Medicinal Properties Pungent and bitter in flavor, slightly cold in nature and attributive to the large intestine and liver meridians.

Actions Clear away heat and eliminate toxin, relieve abscess and promote pus drainage, remove blood stasis and alleviate pain.

Application
1. It is indicated for carbuncle due to heat, for both carbuncle over the body surface and abscess of internal organs, especially effective for periappendicular abscess. For periappendicular abscess with pus, it is usually combined with Yiyiren ( Semen Coicis) and Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Praeparata), such as Yiyi Fuzi Baijiang San (Powder). For the early stage of that, it is usually combined with Jinyinhua ( Flos Lonicerae ), Pugongying ( Herba Taraxaci), and Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan Radicis ), etc. so as to clear away heat and eliminate toxic materials to dissipate abscess. For pulmonary abscess, used together with Yuxingcao ( Herba Houttuyniae ), Lugen ( Rhizoma Phragmitis ), and Jiegeng ( Radix Platycodi ), etc.. For carbuncle and skin infection, usually used together with Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae ) and Lianqiao ( Fructus Forsythiae), etc. which can be used externally or orally.

2. For postpartum abdominal pain and dysmenorrheal due to blood stasis, it can be decocted alone for oral use or used together with Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis ) and Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), etc..
Usage and Dosage 6 -15 g is used in decoction for oral use. Just right amount is for external use.
Notes Contraindicated in a case with deficiency of the spleen and stomach manifested as poor appetite and diarrhea.

Shengdihuang Radix Rehmanniae - Chinese medicinal herbs for eliminating heat and dampness

The source is from the root of Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch, family Scrophulariaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in the provinces of Henan, Hebei, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the Northeast China, collected in autumn, fresh or dry crude one cut in-to pieces can be used. Medicinal Properties Sweet and bitter in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the heart, liver and kidney meridians.
Actions: Clear away heat and cool the blood, nourish yin and promote the production of the body fluids.

Application
1. It is indicated for seasonal febrile disease involving yingfen and xuefen. It is effective in clearing away heat in xuefen and can nourish yin and promote the production of the body fluids as well. It is usually combined with Xuanshen ( Radix Scrophulariae ), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis ) and others that can clear away heat, promote the production of the body fluids and cool the blood, such as Qingying Tang (Decoction) for season-al febrile diseases involving yingfen and xuefen, which are manifested as fever being more severe at night, restlessness, macules and crimson tongue.

2. For bleeding due to blood-heat manifested as he-matemesis, epistaxis, hemafecia, and hematuria, etc., it is usually used together with Cebaiye (Cacumen Biotae ), Shenheye ( Folium Nelumbinis , unprepared ), Sheng'aiye ( Folium Artemisiae Argyi ), etc., such as Sisheng Wan (Pill); for macules due to blood-heat, it is used together with Mudanpi ( Cortex Moutan Radicis), Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra ).

3. It is used for syndrome of consumption of the body fluids due to yin-deficiency. For febrile disease consuming yin manifested as red tongue and oral dryness, it is combined with Shashen ( Radix Adenophorae ), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis ), and Yuzhu (Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati), etc. ; for diabetes due to internal heat, used together with Huangqi ( Radix Astragali ), Gegen (Radix Puerariae), and Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis), etc.; for febrile diseases with consumption of the body fluids manifested as constipation due to dryness of intestine, it is usually used together with Xuanshen ( Radix Scrophulariae ) and Maimendong ( Radix Ophiopogonis), such as Zengye Tang (Decoction).

Usage and Dosage 9 -15 g is used in decoction for oral use, the fresh amount being doubled or the fresh being pounded into juice that is put in decoction. The fresh is very cold and with plenty of juice, it can clear away heat and promote the production of the body fluids, and has effect of cooling blood and arresting bleeding, so the fresh is suitable for seasonal febrile diseases and bleeding due to blood-heat; the cold nature of the dry is slightly weak while its action of nourishing yin is better, so the dry is especially suitable for yin deficiency with interior heat.

Notes Contraindicated for spleen deficiency with dampness and epigastric fullness with diarrhea since the medicinal herb is cold, cool and moist in nature.

Xuanshen Radix Scrophulariae - Chinese medicinal herbs for eliminating heat and dampness

The source is from the root of Scrophalaria ningpoensis Hemsl, family Scrophulariaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in the reaches of Yangtze River and provinces of Shaanxi, Fujian, and so on. Besides, many plants are cultivated in Zhejiang province, and their roots are dug and collected in early stage of winter, piled up in the sun until the interior of the roots becomes black, and then are dried in the sun, cut into pieces and the crude form can be used.

Medicinal Properties Bitter, sweet and salty in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the lung, stomach and kidney meridians.
Actions: Clear away heat and cool the blood, nourish yin and promote the production of the body fluids, relieve toxin and benefit the throat.

Application
1. For seasonal febrile diseases involving yingfen and xuefen, consuming yin and causing blood-heat, which are manifested as fever, maculae, oral dryness, and red and crimson tongue, etc., it is usually combined with Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae), Lianqiao ( Fructus Forsythiae), and Jinyinhua ( Flos Lonicerae ), etc., such as Qingying Tang (Decoction); for febrile diseases causing pyrosyndrome involving both qifen and xuefen, macules and skin rash, it can also be combined with Shigao ( Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Daqingye (Folium Isatidis), etc., so as to strengthen the action of clearing away heat and purging fire, relieving toxin, or letting out the skin eruptions and resolving macules.

2. It is used for carbuncle of heat type, scrofula and subcutaneous nodule. For carbuncle and pyocutaneous disease, it is usually combined with Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae ) , Lianqiao Fructus Forsythiae ) and others that can clear away heat and relieve toxin; for scrofula and subcutaneous nodule, combined with Muli (Concha Ostreae ) , Beimu ( Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii ), etc. which can together clear away heat, relieve toxin and disperse the stagnated mass.
3. It is used for yin-deficiency leading to hyperactivity of fire. For deficiency of lung and kidney yin manifested as cough, dryness of throat, hectic fever, night sweet and hemoptysis, it is combined with Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae ), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis ), Beimu (Butbus Fritillariae Thunbergii) and others that can nourish yin and resolve phlegm; for bone steaming and consumptive fever, combined with Dignpi (Cortex Lycii Radicis ), Mudanpi ( Cortex Moutan Radicis ), etc; for diabetes of heat type, used together with Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis ) and Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae ).

4. It is used for swollen and sore throat. Being a common medicinal herb to treat swollen and sore throat, it can always be combined with according to syndrome, whether sore throat is caused by exogenous wind and heat, or by sthenic-heat of lung meridian or by hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency; for that caused by exogenous wind and heat, usually combined with Niubangzi (Fructus Arctii ) and Bohe ( Herba Menthae) ; for that caused by hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency, usually combined with Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis ), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) and Gancao ( Radix Glycyrrhizae), such as Xuan Mai Gan Jie Tang (Decoction).

Usage and Dosage 10 -15 g is used in decoction for oral use.
Notes Being cold and stagnated in nature, it is contraindicated in the case with deficiency and cold of the spleen and stomach marked by loss of appetite and loose stool. It is incompatible with Lilu (Rhizoma et Radix Veratri ) .

Mudanpi Cortex Moutan Radicis - Chinese medicinal herbs for eliminating heat and dampness

The source is from cortex of Paeonia suffruticoas Andr, family Ramunculaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in the provinces of Anhui, Shandong, etc., collected in autumn and dried in the sun. The crude or stir-baked one can be used.
Medicinal Properties Bitter and pungent in flavor and slightly cold in nature, and attributive to the heart, liver and kidney meridians.
Actions Clear away heat, cool and circulate the blood to remove blood stasis.

Application
1. It is used for blood heat syndrome manifested as maculae and papules, haematemesis and epistaxis and has the actions of cooling blood and arresting bleeding and can clear away heat from yingfen and xuefen as well. For haematemesis, epistaxis and maculae and papules due to hemopyretic bleeding, it is usually combined with Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae ) , Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) and others that can cool blood and arrest bleeding.

2. It is used for febrile diseases injuring yin and fever due to yin deficiency. It can clear away latent pyrexia from yinfen, so it is often used in treatment of the syndrome of residual heat and consumption of the body fluids of seasonal febrile disease at the late stage manifested as fever at night and cool in the early morning, fever and bone steaming, fever bringing down with anhidrosis, and usually combined with Biejia (Carapax Trionycis ), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae ), Zhimu ( Rhizoma Anemarrhenae ), etc., such as Qinghao Biejia Tang (Decoction) ; for seasonal febrile disease with heat involving yingfen and xuefen marked by fever being severe at night, macules, and crimson tongue, etc., it is usually combined with Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae ), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), and Lianqiao ( Fructus Forsythiae ) , etc..

3. It is used for blood-stasis syndrome, and is especially suitable for stagnation of heat and stasis of blood. For amenorrhea due to stagnation of blood, dysmenorrhea, abdominal mass or traumatic injury, it is usually combined with Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Taoren (Semen Persicae ) , and Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei ), etc..

4. The source is from cortex of Paeonia suffruticoas Andr, family Ramunculaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in the provinces of Anhui, Shandong, etc., collected in autumn and dried in the sun. The crude or stir-baked one can be used.
Medicinal Properties Bitter and pungent in flavor and slightly cold in nature, and attributive to the heart, liver and kidney meridians.
Actions Clear away heat, cool and circulate the blood to remove blood stasis.

Application
1. It is used for blood heat syndrome manifested as maculae and papules, haematemesis and epistaxis and has the actions of cooling blood and arresting bleeding and can clear away heat from yingfen and xuefen as well. For haematemesis, epistaxis and maculae and papules due to hemopyretic bleeding, it is usually combined with Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae ) , Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) and others that can cool blood and arrest bleeding.

2. It is used for febrile diseases injuring yin and fever due to yin deficiency. It can clear away latent pyrexia from yinfen, so it is often used in treatment of the syndrome of residual heat and consumption of the body fluids of seasonal febrile disease at the late stage manifested as fever at night and cool in the early morning, fever and bone steaming, fever bringing down with anhidrosis, and usually combined with Biejia (Carapax Trionycis ), Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae ), Zhimu ( Rhizoma Anemarrhenae ), etc., such as Qinghao Biejia Tang (Decoction) ; for seasonal febrile disease with heat involving yingfen and xuefen marked by fever being severe at night, macules, and crimson tongue, etc., it is usually combined with Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae ), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), and Lianqiao ( Fructus Forsythiae ) , etc..

The source is from root of Paeonia lactiflora Pall, or several other species of the same genus, family Ranunculaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Sichuan, Northeast China, etc., dug and collected in spring and autumn, dried in the sun and cut into pieces. The crude or the stir-baked can be used. Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, slightly cold in nature and attributive to the liver meridian.
Actions: Clear away heat and cool blood remove blood stasis and relieve pain.

Application
1. For seasonal febrile diseases involving yingfen and xuefen with fever that is severe at night, purplish dark eruptions and macules, crimson tongue and blood-heat syndrome with haematemesis or epistaxis, it is usually combined with Shengdihuang ( Radix Rehmanniae ), Mudanpi ( Cortex Moutan Radicis ) , etc..

2. It is used for blood stasis syndrome manifested as amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, abdominal masses and trauma, and especially suitable for heat stagnation and blood stasis or abdominal pain due to stagnation of blood. For stagnation of blood-heat with amenorrhea or dysmenorrhea, it is usually combined with Yimucao (Herba Leonuri), Danshen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae) and Zelan (Herba Lycopi); for blood stasis with abdominal masses, used together with Mudanpi ( Cortex Moutan Radicis), Taoren (Semen Persicae), etc. ; for trauma and stagnated swelling and pain, usually used with Ruxian ( Olibanum ) , Moyao ( Myrrha ), Xuejie ( Resina Draconis) and others that can circulate blood and treat injury.

In addition, it can also be used for liver-heat with red, swollen and painful eyes, and has certain action of clearing away liver-fire, it is usually combined with Juhua ( Flos Chrysanthemi ), Xiakucao ( Spica Prunellae ), etc..

Usage and Dosage 6 -12 g is used in decoction for oral use.
Notes: It is not suitable for blood-cold syndrome with amenorrhea, and incompatible with Lilu (Rhizoma et Radix Veratri).

The source is from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, family Labiatae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in the provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, and inner Mongolia autonomous region, etc., digged up and collected in spring and autumn, usually cut into pieces, the crude one and the one stir-baked with wine or the carbonized one may be used.
Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the lung, stomach, gallbladder and large intestine meridians. Actions: Clear away heat and remove dampness purge the sthenic fire and remove toxic materials, cool blood and stop bleeding to prevent miscarriage.

Application
1. It is used for seasonal febrile diseases of dampness type, jaundice, dysentery and stranguria of damp-heat type, especially effective in clearing away damp-heat of both the middle and upper energizers. For the treatment of seasonal febrile disease of damp type with fever, perspiration, chest oppression, greasy fur, it is used together with Huashi (Talcum), Tongcao (Medulla Tetrapanacis ) , and Baidoukou ( Fructus Amomi Rotundus), etc., such as Huangqin Huashi Tang (Decoction). For jaundice of damp-heat type, it is often combined with Yinchen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae), Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae ), and Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei ), etc. so as to strengthen the effects of draining the gallbladder to relieve jaundice. For the treatment of dysentery of damp-heat type, it is combined with Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis ) and Gegen ( Radix Puerariae ), such as Gegen Qin Lian Tang (Decoction), for the treatment of damp-heat of the bladder with dribbling and painful urination, used together with Mutong (RadixAkebiae , Huashi (Talcum), Cheqianzi ( Semen Plantaginis) and others that can eliminate heat and dampness.

2. It is used for sthenic-heat syndrome of qifen and cough due to lung-heat and good at clearing away lung-fire and sthenic-heat of the upper energizer. It can be used alone, namely Qingjin Wan (Pill), or combined with Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), and Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis) for stag-nation of lung-heat and failure of the lung to depurate and descend marked with cough and thick sputum. For sthenic-heat of qifen with high fever, excessive thirst, urination with redness and constipation, it is often combined with Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae) and others that can purge fire and relax the bowels, such as Liangge San (Powder); for shaoyang syndrome with alternating episodes of chills and fever, used with Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), such as Xiao Chaihu Tang (Decoction), to regulate the function of shaoyang.

3. For exterior sores, abscess of internal organs and other heat-toxin syndromes of internal medicine, surgery and five sensory organs, it is used together with Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis ), Lianqiao ( Fructus Forsythiae ), and Pugongying (Herba Taraxaci), etc..

4. For hemopyretic bleeding manifested as hematemesis, hemoptysis, hematochezia, hemafecia, and metrorrhagia, it can be used alone, or combined with San-qi (Radix Notoginseng), Huaihua ( Flos Sophorae), and Baimaogen (Rhizoma Imperatae), etc..
5. For excessive fetal movement and gravid vaginal bleeding due to heat-syndrome in pregnancy, it can be used together with Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) , Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis ) , and others, such as Danggui San (Powder). Usage and Dosage 3 - 9 g is used in decoction for oral use, the crude one is used for clearing away heat, the stir-baked one for preventing miscarriage, the carbonized one for relieving bleeding, the stir-baked with wine for clearing away heat of the upper energizer.
Notes: It is bitter and cold and easy to injure the stomach, so it is contraindicated for deficiency and cold of the spleen and stomach.

Chinese medicinal herbs for eliminating heat and dampness - Huanglian Rhizoma Coptidis

The source is from Rhizome of Coptis chinensis Franch, and C. deltoidea C. Y. Cheng et Hsiao or Coptis teetoides C.Y. Cheng, family Ranunculaceae. The producing areas are mainly in the provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan. The medicinal material is dug and collected in autumn and dried. The crude or stir-baked one can be used. Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the heart, liver, stomach and large intestine meridians.
Actions: Clear away heat and remove dampness purge the sthenic fire and eliminate toxic materials.

Application
1. It is used for dysentery and vomiting of dampness-heat type. It has a strong action of clearing away heat and eliminating dampness and is especially good at removing heat and dampness from the middle energizer, and serves as an essential medicinal herb for treatment of diarrhea and dysentery of damp-heat type. In the case accompanied with abdominal pain due to qi stagnation, it can be combined with Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) that can circulate qi and arrest pain, such as Xianglian Wan (Pill); in the case with general fever, combined with Gegen (Radix Puerariae ) and Huangqin ( Radix Scutellariae ), such as Gegen Qm Llan Tang (Decoction); for dysentery with pus and blood, combined with Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis ), Rougui ( Cortex Cinnamomi ), Baishaoyao ( Radix Paeoniae Alba ), etc., such as Shaoyao Tang (Decoction); for damp-heat stagnation in the middle energizer and disorder of qi activity with full-ness in the epigastric abdomen with nausea and vomiting, usually used together with Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae ) , Ganjiang ( Rhizoma Zingiberis ) , and Banxia ( Rhizoma Pinelliae), etc., such as Banxia Xiexin Tang (Decoction).

2. It is used for high fever and restlessness due to excessive heat and fire. It is good at clearing away sthenicheat of heart meridian. It can be used for febrile disease with excessive fire and heat marked by high fever and restlessness and is usually combined with Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae) and Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), such as Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Decoction) ; for sthenic heart-fire and insufficiency of yin and blood manifested as dysphoria and insomnia, it can be used together with Ejiao ( Colla Corii Asini ) and Baishaoyao ( Radix Paeoniae Alba ), such as Huanglian Ejiao Tang (Decoction); for excessive heart-fire flaming up with aphthae, it can be used alone or together with the same dosage of Xixin ( Herba Asari ), which are ground into powder for use in mouth; for hemopyretic bleeding due to excessive heart-fire with hemafecia or epistaxis, used together with Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) and Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae ), such as Xiexin Tang (Decoction).

3. It is used for toothache due to stomach-fire and vomiting due to stomach-heat. For the former, it is used together with Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae ), Shengma ( Rhizoma Cimicifugae ), and Baizhi ( Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), etc. so as to clear away stomach-fire and expel stagnated fire, such as Qingwei San (Powder); for the latter with uncomfortable feelings in the epigastric region, combined with Banxia ( Rhizoma Pinelliae ), Zhuru (Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam ) and others that can relieve vomiting, so it is a common medicinal herb for treatment of vomiting due to stomach heat; it can be also used together with Wuzhuyu (Fructus Evodiae), such as Zuojin Wan (Pill) to treat vomiting with acid regurgitation due to liver-fire attacking the stomach, and combined with Tianhuafen ( Radix Trichosanthis ), Dihuang ( Radix Rehmanniae) and others that can clear away heat and promote the production of the body fluids to treat syndrome of excessive stomach-fire with polyorexia and diabetes manifested as excessive thirst and frequent drinking.

4. It is used for carbuncle and swelling and sore of dampness type due to heat-toxin and especially good at treatment of furunculosis since it can clear away heat and eliminate dampness, and purge fire for removing toxin. Orally it can be combined with Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae ), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei ), and Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae) and others that can clear away heat and eliminate toxic materials and also combined with other herbs for external use.

Usage and Dosage 2 -5 g is used in decoction for oral use and 0.5 -1 g of the powder is swallowed and just right amount for external use. The one stir-baked with wine can clear away fire from the upper energizer and the one stir-baked with ginger juice and Wuzhuyu (Fructus Evodiae) can moderate the bitter and cold property so as to strengthen the action of relieving vomiting and with pork bile can purge sthenic-fire of the liver and gallbladder.

Notes: Being extremely bitter and cold, it is easy to injure yang-qi of the spleen and stomach and contraindicated for deficiency and cold of the spleen and stomach and with caution for consumption of yin due to its bitter and dry property and of body fluids due to yin deficiency.

Chinese medicinal herbs for eliminating heat and dampness - Huanghai Cortex Phellodendri

The source is from the bark of a deciduous arbor, Phellodendrou amurense Rupr. or P. chinense Schneid, family Rutaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin, and Hebei, etc., P. chinense Schneid in Sichuan, Guizhou, Hubei, and Yunnan, etc.. During April and May, the trees are barked and the rough skin is scraped, the left bark being dried in the sun. Usually the crude one is cut into pieces or thin pieces or further stir-baked with salt solution or with wine for medication. Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the kidney, bladder and large intestine meridians.
Actions: Clear away heat and remove dampness, purge the sthenic fire and eliminate toxic materials, reduce asthenia-heat and bone steaming.
Application
1. It is used for syndromes of dampness-heat type in the lower energizer and very effective in clearing away dampness and heat from the lower energizer. For yellow and thick leukorrhea due to damp-heat, it is usually combined with Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), Qianshi (Semen Euryales), and Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis), etc., such as Yihuang Tang (Decoction). For dampness and heat of the bladder marked by dripping discharge of urine with pain, it is usually combined with Cheqianzi ( Semen Plantaginis ), Huashi ( Talcum ), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae) and others that can clear away heat, promote urination and treat stranguria. It is combined with Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis ), Niuxi ( Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), such as Sanmiao Wan (Pill) to treat beriberi and swelling and pain of foot and knees due to damp invasion of the lower energizer. For dysentery of damp-heat type, combined with Baitouweng (Radix Pulsatillae ) , Huanglian ( Rhizoma Coptidis ) , Qinpi ( Cortex Fraxini) and others that can clear away heat, eliminate dampness and toxin, such as Baitouweng Tang (Decoction); for jaundice and brownish urine due to dampness and heat, often combined with Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), Yinchen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae), etc., such as Zhizi Baipi Tang (Decoction).
2. For insufficiency of kidney yin and excessive kidney-fire manifested as hectic fever, night sweat, and emission, it is often combined with Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae ) , Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata), Shanyurou ( Fructus Corni ), etc., such as prescription of Zhi Bai Dihuang Wan (Pill).
3. It is used for pyocutaneous disease of heat type, carbuncle, furuncle, erysipelas, and burn, etc.. It is of ten used orally by combining it with Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae ) and others that can clear away heat and relieve toxin, and externally used by covering its powder on the wounded area, or decocted for external washing.
Usage and Dosage 2 -12 g is used in decoction for oral use, or in pill or powder form. Just right amount is for external use. The crude one is usually used for clearing away heat, eliminating dampness and relieving toxin, the one stir-baked with salt solution is usually used for purging fire and expelling hectic fever, and the carbonized one for arresting bleeding.
Notes: Being bitter in flavor and cold in nature easily injures stomach-qi, so it is contraindicated in a case with deficiency and cold of the spleen and stomach.
Explanation Huanglian ( Rhizoma Coptidis ), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) and Huangbai Cortex Phellodendri) are all bitter in flavor and cold in nature, all have the actions of clearing away heat, eliminating dampness, purging fire and relieving toxin, but Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) is good at clearing away heart or stomach fire, and more effective in relieving toxin; Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) is good at clearing away lungfire, and arresting bleeding and preventing miscarriage; Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) dominates to clear away kidney-fire and dampness-heat of the lower energizer. Therefore, there has been a saying that Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) clears the fire of the upper-energizer, Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), the fire of the middle-energizer and Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), the fire of the lower-energizer.

The source is from the root and rhizome of a perennial plant, Gentiana scabra Bye. or G. triflora Pall., family Gentianaceae. The medicinal material is produced in all parts of China, mostly in Northeast China, collected in autumn, dried in the sun. Usually the crude one is cut into segments for medication. Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, cold in nature, and attributive to the liver, gallbladder and bladder meridians.

Actions Clear away heat and dry dampness and purge sthenic-fire from the liver and gallbladder.

Application
1. It is indicated for all syndromes due to dampness-heat of the lower energizer and especially good at damp-heat invasion of the lower energizer manifested as jaundice, brownish urine, pudendal swelling, pruritus vuluae, leukorrhea, and eczema, etc.. In treatment of jaundice, it is usually used together with Yinchen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae ) and Zhizi ( Fructus Gardeniae ); in treatment of pudendal swelling and pruritus vuluae, yellow and thick leukorrhea, swelling and painful scrotum and eczema with itching, usually combined with Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri ), Kushen (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis ) , and Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis), etc..
2. For headache of liver-fire type marked by conjunctivitis, deafness, hypochondriac pain and bitter taste in the mouth, it is usually used together with Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri ), Huangqin ( Radix Scutellariae ), and Mutong ( Caulis Akebiae), etc., such as Longdan Xiegan Tang (Decoction).

3. For wind-syndrome due to the domination of liver meridian-heat with high fever and infantile convulsion, and convulsion of feet and hands, it is usually used together with Gouteng (Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), and Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), etc. to clear away liver-fire to stop wind.

Usage and Dosage 3 -6 g is used in decoction for oral use or used externally with proper dosage.

Notes Being extreme bitter and cold and easily injuring stomach-qi, it is not suitable to be used excessively or for a long time, and with caution for syndrome of deficiency and cold of the spleen and stomach and consumption of the body fluids due to yin deficiency.

Chinese medicinal herbs for eliminating heat and dampness-Kushen Radix Sophorae Flavescentis

Kushen Radix Sophorae Flavescentis
The source is from the root of the Sophora flavescens Ait., family Leguminosae. The medicinal material is produced in all parts of China, collected in spring or autumn, cut into pieces, dried in the sun and the raw is used.
Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the liver, stomach, large intestine and bladder meridians.
Actions Clear away heat and dry dampness promote diuresis and kill worms.
Application

1. It is suitable for dysentery of dampness-heat type and jaundice with brownish urine. It can be used alone or combined with Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae ), such as Xiang Shen Wan (Pill) to treat the former syndrome; it is usually combined with Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), Yinchen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae ) and Longdan ( Radix Gentianae ), etc. so as to remove dampness to cure jaundice in the treatment of jaundice; combined with Cheqianzi ( Semen Plantaginis ), Zexie ( Rhizoma Alismatis) and others that promote diuresis in the treatment of stranguria of dampness-heat type and dysuria.

2. It is used in the treatment of pruritus vuluae, eczema, and scabies. It can kill worms and arrest itching as well as clear away heat and eliminate dampness, so it is a common medicine to treat the above skin diseases, and can be used orally or externally. It is usually combined with Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri ), Shechuangzi ( Fructus Cnidii) , etc..

Usage and Dosage 3 -10 g is used in decoction and just the right amount is used externally.

Notes Contraindicated for deficiency and cold of the spleen and stomach since it is more bitter and colder in property, and it's incompatible with Lilu (Rhizoma et Radix Veratri ) .

Shigao Gypsum Fibrosum -Traditional Chinese Medicine

It is the monoclinic system of gypsum ore, containing hydrous calcium sulfate, its producing areas are in the provinces of Hubei, Gansu and Sichuan and can be mined all year round. The crude one may be pounded or calcined for being used as a medication. Medicinal Properties Bitter and sweet in flavor, extreme cold in nature and attributive to the lung and stomach meridians.

Actions: Clear away heat and purge fire, relieve restlessness and thirst, and induce astringent and promote tissue regeneration.

Application
1. It is used for high fever and excessive thirst. With strong actions of clearing away heat and purging fire, and relieving restlessness and thirst, it is the essential medicine to clear away sthenic heat in qifen of lung and stomach meridians. For sthenic-heat syndrome manifested as seasonal febrile disease in qifen, high fever, excessive thirst, and perspiration, it is often used together with Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), such as Baihu Tang (Decoction). For pyrosyndrome involving both qifen and xuefen with high fever, coma, delirium and maculae, it is usually combined with Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae ) , Mudanpi ( Cortex Moutan Radicis ), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae ) and others that can cool blood.

2. For stagnation of heat in the lung manifested as cough, thick sputum, fever and thirst, it is often combined with Mahuang (Herba Ephedra ), Xingren ( Semen Armeniacae Amarum) to strengthen its action of relieving cough and asthma, such as Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang (Decoction).

3. For up-rising of stomach-fire with headache, swelling and pain of gum, it is often combined with Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Shengma ( Rhizoma Cimicifugae) and others that can clear away stomach-heat, such as Qingwei San (Powder).

4. Externally used for inducing astringent and promoting tissue regeneration, pyocutaneous disease, eczema, burned or boiled wounds and bleeding due to trauma. It can be used in single or together with Qingdai ( Indigo Naturalis), Huangbai ( Cortex Phellodendri ), etc. to clear away heat and remove toxic materials, eliminate dampness and treat ulcer. Usage and Dosage 15 -60 g is used in decoction for oral use and the crude is suitable to be broken and decocted early; externally used with suitable amount, calcined and then pounded into powder which is mixed with water, being covered on the wounded area.

Notes: It is contraindicated in the patient with deficiency and cold of the spleen and stomach, or interior heat due to yin deficiency.

Zhimu Rhizoma Anemarrhenae -Traditional Chinese Medicine

The source is from rhizome of a perennial herbaceous plant, Anemarrhena asphodegoides Bunge, family Liliaceae. The producing areas are mainly in the provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, and Northeast China, etc.. The medicinal material is collected in spring and autumn, the crude without hair or external skin is dried in the sun and cut into pieces or stir-baked with a salt solution for use. Medicinal Properties Bitter and sweet in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the lung, stomach and kidney meridians. Actions Clear away heat and purge fire, nourish yin and moisturize dryness.

Application
1. For overabundance of pathogenic heat due to seasonal febrile disease with symptoms of high fever and excessive thirst, it is usually combined with Shigao ( Gypsum Fibrosum), such as Baihu Tang (Decoction).

2. The medicinal herb is used for symptoms of cough due to lung-heat, dry cough due to yin deficiency, since it can nourish yin and moisten the lung as well as clear away heat and purge fire from the lung. For cough with yellow sputum due to lung-heat, it is used together with Huangqin ( Radix Seutellariae ), Beimu ( Bulbus Fritillariae), Sangbaipi ( Cortex Mori Radicis ) and others that can clear away heat from the lung and resolve phlegm. For dry cough and dryness of throat due to dryness of the lung and yin-deficiency, it is combined with Shashen (Radix Glehniae), Maimendong (Radix Ophiogonis) and others that can nourish yin and moisten the lung.

3. For the hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency marked by hectic fever, night sweat and restlessness, it is often combined with Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri ) that is added to yin nourishing medicinal herbs so as to strengthen the action of nourishing yin to reduce fire, such as Zhi Bai Dihuang Wan (Pill).

4. For Diabetes due to yin deficiency manifested as thirst due to consumption of body fluids, constipation due to dryness of intestine, it can be combined with Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis ), Gegen ( Radix Puerariae ) and others that can clear away heat and promote the regeneration of body fluids.

Usage and Dosage 6 - 12 g is used in decoction for oral use. The crude is suitable for clearing away heat and purging fire; the stir-baked form with salt solution for nourishing yin and reducing fire.

Notes Contraindicated in the patient with diarrhea due to spleen-deficiency since the drug is cold in nature and moistening in property, and can lubricate the intestine.

Zhizi Fructus Gardeniae -Traditional Chinese Medicine

The source is from a fruit of Gardenia jasminoides Ellis var. radicans (Thunb.) Makino, family Rubiaceae. The producing areas are maily in all provinces to the south of the Yangtze River. The medicinal material is collected in autumn and the crude or the one stir-baked to brown or the carbonized can be used. Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the heart, liver and triple energizer meridians. Actions Purge sthenic fire to relieve vexation, clear away heat and remove dampness, cool blood and remove toxic materials, subside swelling to alleviate pain.

Application
1. It is used for febrile disease with irritability and can clear away fire from the triple energizer and heart, and relieve vexation. For febrile diseases with irritability, it is often combined with Dandouchi (Semen Sojae Praeparata), such as Zhizi Chi Tang (Decoction) ; for overabundance of heart-heat with high fever, irritability, coma and delirium, usually used together with Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis ) , Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae ) , Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri ) and others that can clear away heat and purge fire, such as Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Decoction).

2. For stagnation of dampness and heat in the liver and gallbladder manifested as jaundice, fever and oliguria with brownish urine, it is often combined with Yinchen ( Herba Artemisiae Scopariae ), Dahuang ( Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), etc., such as Yinchenhao Tang (Decoction).

3. For bleeding due to blood-heat manifested as hematemesis, epistaxis, and hematuria, etc.. It is often combined with Baimaogen (Rhizoma Imperatae), Shengdihuang ( Radix Rehmanniae ), and Huangqin ( Radix Scutellariae ) , etc...

4. It is used for pyocutaneous disease with swelling and trauma. For the former due to heat-toxin with reddish swelling and heat pain, it is often combined with Jinyinhua ( Flos Lonicerae ) , Lianqiao ( Fructus Forsythiae ), and Pugongying (Herba Taraxaci); for the latter, or trauma with local swelling and pain, the crude one can be ground into powder, which is mixed with egg white for local application. Usage and Dosage 6 - 9 g is used in decoction for oral use, the crude one is used for purging fire, the carbonized one for stopping bleeding.

Notes It is not suitable for loose stool due to spleen- deficiency.

Xiakucao Spica Prunellae -Traditional Chinese Medicine

The source is from spike of Prunella vulgaris L., family Labiatae. The producing areas are in all parts of China, but mainly in the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui, etc.. The medicinal material is collected in summer, dried in the sun and the raw is used for medication.
Medicinal Properties Bitter and pungent in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the liver and gall-bladder meridians.

Actions Clear away liver-fire and disperse stagnation.Application1. For hyperactivity of liver-fire with conjunctivitis, headache and dizziness, it is often combined with Juhua ( Flos Chrysanthemi ), Juemingzi ( Semen Cassiae ), etc. ;for insufficiency of liver-yin with eye pains, it is used together with Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii ) so as to nourish the liver and improve eyesight. Now it is often used for the treatment of high blood pressure due to liver heat and yang hyperactivity.

2. For scrofula and goiter caused by stagnation of phlegm and fire due to stagnation of liver-qi transforming into fire, it is often combined with Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii ), Xuanshen ( Radix Scrophulariae), and Muli (Concha Ostreae ); for goiter, also used with Haigeke (Concha Cyclinae ), Kunbu (Thallus Laminariae seu Eckloniae ) , and Haizao ( Sargassum ), etc..
Usage and Dosage 9 -15 g is used in decoction for oral use, or decocted into medicinal extract for oral use.Notes Used with caution in those with deficiency of the spleen and stomach.
