Hongteng Caulis Sargentodoxae

The source is from the stem of a deciduous woody vine, Sargentodoxa cuneata Rehd. et Wits., family Lardizabalaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in provinces of Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, and Jiangsu, etc. and collected in autumn and summer, cut into segments when fresh and dried in the sun for use.
Medicinal Properties Bitter in flavor, slightly cold in nature and attributive to the large intestine and liver meridians.
Actions: Clear away heat and eliminate toxin, circulate the blood to remove blood stasis.

Application
1. It is indicated for periappendicular abscess with abdominal pain and an essential medicine to treat periappendicular abscess. It can be used together with Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei ), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan Radicis), Jinyinhua (Ftos Lonicerae) and others that can clear away heat, eliminate toxin and cool the blood so as to strengthen the action of eliminating toxic materials and dissipating abscess.

2. For trauma and irregular menstruation due to blood stasis, it can be used alone or together with Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), and Chishaoyao ( Radix Paeoniae Rubra ) , etc..
Usage and Dosage 15 - 30 g is used in decoction for oral use, just right amount is used externally.
Notes: Contraindicated in pregnant women.
