Shengdihuang Radix Rehmanniae - Chinese medicinal herbs for eliminating heat and dampness

The source is from the root of Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch, family Scrophulariaceae. The medicinal material is mainly produced in the provinces of Henan, Hebei, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the Northeast China, collected in autumn, fresh or dry crude one cut in-to pieces can be used. Medicinal Properties Sweet and bitter in flavor, cold in nature and attributive to the heart, liver and kidney meridians.
Actions: Clear away heat and cool the blood, nourish yin and promote the production of the body fluids.

Application
1. It is indicated for seasonal febrile disease involving yingfen and xuefen. It is effective in clearing away heat in xuefen and can nourish yin and promote the production of the body fluids as well. It is usually combined with Xuanshen ( Radix Scrophulariae ), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis ) and others that can clear away heat, promote the production of the body fluids and cool the blood, such as Qingying Tang (Decoction) for season-al febrile diseases involving yingfen and xuefen, which are manifested as fever being more severe at night, restlessness, macules and crimson tongue.

2. For bleeding due to blood-heat manifested as he-matemesis, epistaxis, hemafecia, and hematuria, etc., it is usually used together with Cebaiye (Cacumen Biotae ), Shenheye ( Folium Nelumbinis , unprepared ), Sheng'aiye ( Folium Artemisiae Argyi ), etc., such as Sisheng Wan (Pill); for macules due to blood-heat, it is used together with Mudanpi ( Cortex Moutan Radicis), Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra ).

3. It is used for syndrome of consumption of the body fluids due to yin-deficiency. For febrile disease consuming yin manifested as red tongue and oral dryness, it is combined with Shashen ( Radix Adenophorae ), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis ), and Yuzhu (Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati), etc. ; for diabetes due to internal heat, used together with Huangqi ( Radix Astragali ), Gegen (Radix Puerariae), and Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis), etc.; for febrile diseases with consumption of the body fluids manifested as constipation due to dryness of intestine, it is usually used together with Xuanshen ( Radix Scrophulariae ) and Maimendong ( Radix Ophiopogonis), such as Zengye Tang (Decoction).

Usage and Dosage 9 -15 g is used in decoction for oral use, the fresh amount being doubled or the fresh being pounded into juice that is put in decoction. The fresh is very cold and with plenty of juice, it can clear away heat and promote the production of the body fluids, and has effect of cooling blood and arresting bleeding, so the fresh is suitable for seasonal febrile diseases and bleeding due to blood-heat; the cold nature of the dry is slightly weak while its action of nourishing yin is better, so the dry is especially suitable for yin deficiency with interior heat.

Notes Contraindicated for spleen deficiency with dampness and epigastric fullness with diarrhea since the medicinal herb is cold, cool and moist in nature.
